Swedish Massage in Tysons / Vienna, VA
The classic full-body massage — medium pressure, flowing strokes, the one to book when you don't know what you need.
Classic Relaxation
Swedish Massage in Vienna
Swedish is the massage to book when you are not sure what to book. It is the default first visit — flowing strokes, medium pressure, full body, no specialist agenda — and the one we quietly recommend to friends and to first-time guests calling from a desk somewhere in Tysons Corner. It does what people actually want a massage to do: drop the volume on a loud week, work out the everyday stiffness in the back and shoulders, send you home in a better mood than you arrived.
Our certified senior therapists at TAO Therapeutic Massage Spa treat Swedish with the same care as our therapeutic services. The pressure is even, the pacing is unhurried, and the touch is informed — the kind of work where you can feel the therapist reading your body and adjusting in real time. If you finish a 60-minute session and want to go further, the natural next step is the TAO Signature Combo, which blends Swedish relaxation with deeper therapeutic work. If you already know your back needs serious attention, jump straight to our Deep Tissue Massage page instead.
We see Swedish booked most often by two groups — software engineers and consultants from the Tysons offices unspooling after a long week, and parents from McLean, Falls Church, and Oakton stealing back an hour for themselves. If you are in either camp, this is the right starting point. For a wider view of our menu, browse the TAO Massage Styles Guide.
Why Swedish
What Swedish Massage Actually Does
The Default First Visit
If you have never had a professional massage, or it has been long enough that you cannot remember the last one, Swedish is what you book. Medium pressure, full body, no surprises — the right place to learn how your body responds before you scale into deeper work.
Real Sleep That Night
Most clients fall asleep faster the evening after a 60-minute Swedish. The long, repetitive strokes drop the nervous system out of sympathetic mode, and the body keeps coasting on that calm for a good six to eight hours.
Circulation Without the Soreness
Effleurage and petrissage move blood through the legs and lower back without the next-day tenderness deep tissue can leave behind. Useful if you want to feel better tomorrow morning, not the day after.
Untangles Desk Tension
The right trap that has been holding your mouse hand for nine hours, the lower back that locks up after a long drive on the Beltway — Swedish reaches those everyday holding patterns before they harden into something that needs deep tissue.
Lowers Cortisol Quickly
Warm room, low light, steady hands, slow rhythm. Within twenty minutes the stress hormone curve flattens. By the end of the session, the conversational loop in your head has gone quiet — that is the measurable part of relaxation.
The Gateway to Combo Work
Many of our regulars start with Swedish, then graduate into the TAO Signature Combo once they know what they want more or less of. Your therapist takes notes — your next session will be calibrated to what worked.

Swedish Massage FAQs
I've never had a massage. Should I start with Swedish? +
Yes. Swedish is the service we recommend to first-time guests at TAO Therapeutic Massage Spa. It uses medium, even pressure across the whole body, so you can learn what you actually enjoy — more pressure in the shoulders, less on the legs, longer on the back — and your therapist will note your preferences for next time. Once you know your body, you can move into Deep Tissue or the TAO Signature Combo with confidence.
How is Swedish different from Deep Tissue? +
Swedish stays at the surface and works the whole body in flowing rhythm. Deep Tissue slows down and presses into the deeper muscle layers to break up adhesions and chronic knots. If you want to feel calm and floaty afterward, choose Swedish. If you have a specific knot or chronic back tightness that has been there for months, read our Deep Tissue page instead — and if you cannot decide, the TAO Signature Combo splits the difference.
Is 60 minutes long enough, or should I book 90? +
60 minutes is the most common choice for a full-body Swedish and covers everything at a steady pace. 90 minutes is what we suggest if you want more time on a specific area — usually the back and shoulders — or if you simply want the relaxation to last longer. The 120-minute session is favored by clients flying in and out of Dulles who want one long session instead of two short ones.
What add-ons make sense with Swedish? +
Hot stone is the most popular pairing — $20 for five extra minutes of warmed basalt stones layered into the session, which is wonderful in winter. Essential oil aromatherapy is another $20 and changes the mood of the room without changing the technique. Body scrub and cupping are also available. See our Hot Stone Massage page for a fuller breakdown.
How often do regular clients come in? +
For general stress maintenance, once a month works for most people. For anyone going through a harder season — a launch at work, a new baby, a stretch of bad sleep — every two to three weeks is the sweet spot. Our packages and membership are built around that rhythm and make the cadence noticeably more affordable.
Where are you located, and how late are you open? +
TAO is at 8292 Old Courthouse Rd Ste C, Vienna, VA 22182 — minutes from Tysons Corner Center, Tysons Galleria, and the Vienna Metro. Open daily 10am to 9pm, which is why we get a lot of evening bookings from people winding down after work. Book through our Square site or call (703) 906-0992.
